Viznitz school

Nursery and junior schools, Lampard Grove, Stamford Hill

A building with no windows, this new school for 180 pupils from the Viznitz community was built during 1985 and 1986 on a site totally enclosed by surrounding buildings.
The new building was grafted on to an existing building, creating interesting site conditions.  New arches echo those of the existing buildings, and create entrance portals that offer semi-private entrance space.  The classrooms are grouped around a central glazed atrium, which acts as an indoor play area.
The school is for the orthodox community, and its inward-looking form reflects its function.
